Workshop in Beijing for the Embassy of India, hosting special Bharatanatyam Session at the Vivekananda Cultural Centre.

On 28th August 2026, the Vivekananda Cultural Centre at the Embassy of India in Beijing hosted an engaging Bharatanatyam workshop. Bringing together a vibrant group of approximately 50 enthusiastic participants, the session offered an immersive introduction to the rich artistic heritage and intricate movement techniques of traditional Indian classical dance.

Throughout the session, attendees explored a balance of practical movement and classical theory. The practical training introduced fundamental posture and rhythmic footwork through basic adavus, culminating in a short, elegant Pushpanjali choreography dedicated to Lord Shiva. Beyond the physical practice, the curriculum immersed participants in the foundational theory of classical dance, offering hands-on experience with hand gestures (mudras), their symbolic usages (hasta viniyogas), and the essential time-keeping rhythmic cycles (talam) that structure performance.

This memorable cultural exchange was made possible through the dedication and seamless coordination of the embassy organizers. Special gratitude is extended to Javier Latorre for the photography and videography and to Juan Du, the Embassy’s Kathak instructor, whose real-time translation into Chinese bridged language barriers and ensured the nuanced artistic concepts resonated deeply with all in attendance.
