Indian Cultural Immersion at Casa de la India (Valladolid)

A sensory journey and a indian cultural immersion through dance, music, and tradition for local high school students.

Casa de la India in Valladolid regularly hosts an inspiring educational program that serves as a bridge between the ancient traditions of India and students from various high schools across the province. It is a genuine honor for me to participate in these sessions on select occasions, joining forces with Mónica de la Fuente to guide these young students through an immersive experience designed to awaken their senses.

The visit begins with a symbolic gesture: inviting the students to remove their shoes. Accompanied by the team of Casa de la India, Mónica and myself, the students tour the different rooms of the institution, immersing themselves in an environment where the architecture, the library’s collection, and the delicate sounds of Hindustani and Carnatic music create a unique atmosphere.

The heart of these sessions is our intimate performance of Indian classical (Bharatanatyam) and fusion dance, a language that transcends words and allows the students to witness the technique, abhinaya (expression), and rhythm up close. However, beyond observation, what makes this experience so special is the students’ active participation.

The day culminates in an open debate, where the students not only ask insightful questions about Indian arts but also draw fascinating comparisons between our culture and their own. To round off the experience, we lead a hands-on workshop, exploring the expressiveness of mudras, the discipline of yoga, and the fundamental movements of classical dance.
