77th Republic Day of India: Bharatanatyam and Spanish Dance dialogue

On January 26th, we had the honor of celebrating the 77th Republic Day of India at the prestigious Hotel InterContinental Madrid, a mesmerizing choreographic dialogue where Bharatanatyam and Spanish classical dance converse, weaving together the rich artistic spirits of India and Spain.

This event served as a powerful testament to the enduring friendship and diplomatic ties between India and Spain. The evening brought together a distinguished assembly, members of the diplomatic corps, government officials from Spain, prominent academicians, artists, and leaders of the Indian community and diaspora.

A highlight of the celebration was the artistic performance I had the privilege to present alongside the esteemed artist Nazaré de la Fuente. Together, we developed a unique choreography that bridges the gap between our two cultures. By weaving Spanish classical dance with the intricate storytelling of Bharatanatyam, we created a rhythmic dialogue between two of the world’s most expressive art forms. Our performance was inspired by the concept: “In a quiet forest, the bee finds the bloom—a soft meeting of wings and petals.” Much like this delicate dance of nature, our performance illustrated how Spain and India weave their unique colors together, celebrating a profound union of spirit, pride, and shared cultural heritage on this significant national day.

The event also focused on the future of bilateral cooperation between our two nations. During the occasion, the Ambassador and our Guest of Honor, Mr. Fernando Mariano Sampedro Marcos, expressed their strong commitment to the initiatives scheduled for the India-Spain 2026 Year of Culture, Tourism, and Artificial Intelligence. This ambitious program marks a new chapter in our relations, focusing on deepening the artistic and historical connections between our peoples, encouraging mutual discovery, and fostering collaboration in the fields of technology and digital advancement. The evening was a beautiful display of how art and diplomacy can unite nations, and we look forward to a transformative year of partnership between India and Spain.
