Onam celebration, Madrid 2025

The Onam festival is a joyous and significant occasion for the Malayali community, celebrated annually to commemorate the homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali. More than just a festival, it’s a vibrant event of tradition, unity, and gratitude for a bountiful harvest. It was with immense pride and excitement that we recently celebrated this special occasion with IMMA, Indian Malayali Madrid Association.

The stage came alive with a variety of performances that honored both tradition and modernity. The audience was captivated by lively performances of popular cinema songs that brought a vibrant, contemporary feel to the celebration. This was followed by the mesmerizing sight of the Thiruvathira, a graceful and rhythmic group dance where a circle of women moved in perfect sync, their synchronized steps telling a story of elegance and community.

The highlight was the opportunity to participate in the celebrations with a special Bharatanatyam recital. It was an honor to share my passion for this classical art form and contribute to the cultural richness of the evening. The performance was a way to connect with the deep-rooted artistic traditions of Kerala and to celebrate our shared heritage. It was an unforgettable experience filled with color, music, and a profound sense of belonging.
