A journey of Indian Dance in Madrid
On October 5, 2025, Madrid witnessed a unique recital of Indian classical dance, showcasing the forms of Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam. The event was conceived as a cultural encounter that merged the Indian arts with a contemporary and personal vision of dance.
The recital featured musical accompaniment by talented artists from diverse parts of the world, including musicians from India, Italy, and Brazil. This international collaboration not only enriched the sonic experience but also reflected the global and open artistic vision presented on stage.
As part of the Bharatanatyam program, I had the honor of performing two highly revered and traditional pieces: a Jathiswaram in Raga Kalyani and a Thillana in Raga Bilahari.
Both items belong to the classical repertoire of Kalakshetra, the renowned dance academy in Chennai. Their choreographies, designed by the legendary Rukmini Devi Arundale, stand as a testament to the beauty, rhythmic precision, and spiritual depth of this style, forming the foundation of our own interpretation of the dance.
Through this presentation, we sought to honor the ancient tradition of the Indian arts while simultaneously sharing our artistic vision, demonstrating how these classical dances remain vibrant and relevant in today’s global cultural landscape.
